She Do The Police In Different Voices

CalArts Festival Theater presents One-Woman "Adaptation with a Los Angeles Twist" of The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot, She do the police in different voices, at Venue 13

Los Angeles/Edinburgh -- CalArts Festival Theater presents She do the police in different voices, a solo adaptation of T. S. Eliot's The Waster Land by Alanna Blair in which she captures each character with a vigor that borders on desperation. The world premier of this explosive and personal place will be at Venue 13, situated at the bottom of the Royal Mile, opposite the Royal Mile Primary School.

The Waste Land is a menagerie of characters, each with a story to tell, each clamoring to be understood. When the presentation of stories becomes a call for change, hope arises - but will summoning rain in this urban desert bring "Death by Water"? This is anything but the poem you read in school - a fast-paced affirmation of the stubborn persistence of life. Even if you don't remember the poem, you'll recognize its themes: identity in a time of global communication when it's already easy to feel alone in a crowd; the desire to love against the fear of inevitable rejection and loss; and how to find our way through the "heap of broken images" that makes up our everyday existence. Through his poem, Eliot offers some hope - he acknowledges our struggle, reassures us that we are not alone, and encourages us to pick up the fragments of our times and make something beautiful of them.

Out of this hope comes the original half-hour performance piece She do the police in different voices., an adaptation of Eliot's poem (named after the poem's original title) that gives each of its characters a fresh perspective and a new compulsion to be heard. From the recently deflowered Hyacinth Girl to the recently dethroned Fisher King, to the mythical Tiresias who surveys the scene.

CalArts Festival Theater has partnered with Venue 13 for the last few years to expand programming to include the experimental work of the students and recent alumni of the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, USA, just north of Los Angeles.
